Interactive training without a VR headset
Every few years a training budget gets pointed at VR, and the same thing happens. The pilot goes well. Then someone asks how it scales.
If the lesson is procedure, sequence, mechanism or diagnosis, a browser tab does the job and there is no hardware to own. Buy headsets when where your body is is the thing being trained: reach, height exposure, confined space, muscle memory.
The objection is logistics, not interest
The pilot goes well. Twelve people in a room, two headsets, a facilitator, good feedback. Then someone asks how it scales to four hundred people across eleven sites, and the answer involves procurement, a hardware refresh cycle, a sanitizing protocol, an IT security review, and a cabinet in each office that somebody has to own.
The pilot was never the hard part.
Nobody disputes that showing beats telling. Watching a trainee take a machine apart in the wrong order and get stopped teaches more than a slide saying not to. That was never the argument.
The argument is that headsets are a fleet. Fleets need budget, storage, charging, cleaning, updates, and a person whose job it partly becomes. For a lot of organizations that overhead is larger than the training problem it was bought to solve. So the program stalls, and training goes back to video.
What a browser can do now
The interesting development is not in headsets. It is that a normal browser tab, on hardware people already own, will run real-time 3D that would have needed a workstation ten years ago. Full geometry, real materials and lighting, physics, and interaction, rendered live. No install. No app store. No account. A link in an email.
Concretely, from the two demos below. The turbofan is 86,554 triangles and 24 textures in a 1,253 KB file. That is the entire download. There is no runtime to install, no headset to charge, and no version of it sitting on a laptop going stale. We wrote up how those numbers were measured in how big a GLB should be for a website.
Open one of those on your phone. That is the whole point being made.
Where this beats video, and where it does not
Worth being straight about the tradeoff, because "interactive" gets oversold.
Interactive wins when order matters
Procedures where the sequence is the lesson. Lockout before service, gowning before entry, purge before disconnect. Video shows the right order. Interaction lets someone get it wrong and find out, which is the part that sticks. The Gram stain demo above is built on exactly this: decolorize for too long and the slide reads as the wrong organism, the same as it would at a real bench.
Interactive wins when the thing has an inside
Anything where understanding requires seeing a hidden relationship. How a spool couples, where a seal sits, what the airflow actually does. A cutaway you can rotate answers questions a fixed camera angle cannot.
Video wins on narrative
If you are telling a story, setting a tone, or delivering a message from leadership, film it. Interactivity adds nothing and costs more.
Video wins on speed and price for simple content
If the material is "here are five policy changes", a video is the correct tool. Do not build a simulation for a bulleted list.
The honest line is that most training libraries need both, and most of them currently have only one.
What about the headset, though
Headsets are genuinely better at a narrow set of things: spatial scale, physical reach, muscle memory, anything where where-your-body-is matters. Height exposure training. Confined-space movement. Sequences you perform with your hands in real space.
If your training problem is one of those, buy headsets. A browser will not replace them.
For everything else, and that is procedure, sequence, mechanism, diagnosis and systems understanding, the headset is carrying hardware overhead for capability the task does not use.
What this costs to find out
A single-mechanism module is typically days rather than weeks. Multi-system builds scale from there. Either way it arrives as a URL. You can put it in an LMS, an email, a QR code on the machine itself, or a tab on a tablet in the plant.
There is no fleet.
